The US economy grew at an annual pace of 3.5% between July and September, its first expansion in more than a year, official data has shown. Analysts say the growth was helped by the "cash for clunkers" car scrappage scheme, and the fear is growth will now fall after this ended in August.
The US economy was also lifted by President Obama's $787bn (£480bn) economic stimulus plan.
But with unemployment still high, the ongoing recovery is set to be slow.
Global good news
The economic growth between July and September indicates that the US has likely exited a recession that first started in December 2007.
However, the official confirmation still has to come from the National Bureau of Economic Research, the agency which considers a number of factors in coming to its decision.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government may end up throwing away unused doses of swine flu vaccine if people cannot get it soon enough, the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.
Members of Congress questioned whether federal officials were too rosy in their estimates of how much vaccine would be available and when, and companies said they were still struggling to produce immunizations against H1N1.
CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden said 22.4 million doses were now available to states, which can get them a day after they order them.

Car bomb kills scores in Pakistan as Clinton visits 
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A car bomb killed more than 80 people and wounded about 100 on Wednesday in a crowded market in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, a doctor and officials said, the latest in a series of bloody militant attacks.
The blast, the deadliest in Pakistan this year, came hours after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Pakistan pledging a fresh start in ties with an increasingly embattled and skeptical partner in the struggle against Islamist militancy.
The Peshawar bomb went off in the busy Peepal Mandi market street in the old city, sparking a fire that engulfed several buildings.
"The figure is rising. We have more than 80 dead including women and children," Sahib Gul, a doctor at the city's main hospital, told Reuters.
