In six years of studying economics, not once did I hear the word"ecology". So if it hadn't have been for the chance purchase of a videocalled Gandhi in the final term of my degree, I'd probably have endedup earning a fine living in a very respectable job persuading Indianfarmers to go GM, or something useful like that. The little chap in theloincloth taught me one huge lesson – to be the change I wanted to seein the world. Trouble was, I had no idea back then what that change was.
在学习经济学的六年里，我从没听过“生态保护运动”这个词。所以要不是在最后一个学期我心血来潮买了盘有关甘地的录像带，往后的人生我可能会活得异常滋润，手里有一份令人羡艳的工作，比如劝说印度农民们去通用打工，或是别的什么类似的有用工作。那个缠着腰布的小个子男人给我结结实实地上了一课：欲变世界，先修吾身。但问题是，我还没想好要改变什么。
After managing a couple of organic foodcompanies made me realise that even "ethical business" would never bequite enough, an afternoon's philosophising with a mate changedeverything. We were looking at the world's issues – environmentaldestruction, sweatshops, factory farms, wars over resources – andwondering which of them we should dedicate our lives to. But I realisedthat I was looking at the world in the same way a western medicalpractitioner looks at a patient, seeing symptoms and wondering how tofirefight them, without any thought for their root cause. So I decidedinstead to become a social homeopath, a pro-activist, and toinvestigate the root cause of these symptoms.

One of the criticalcauses of those symptoms is the fact we no longer have to see thedirect repercussions our purchases have on the people, environment andanimals they affect. The degrees of separation between the consumer andthe consumed have increased so much that we're completely unaware ofthe levels of destruction and suffering embodied in the stuff we buy.The tool that has enabled this separation is money.
其中的一个关键性原因就是，我们不再能直接感受到我们购买的商品对人、环境和动物所造成的影响。消费者和商品之间的距离正变得越来越远，以至于我们完全不知道我们所购买的商品，实际上这个世界造成了多么严重的破坏。而这种距离正是由金钱造成的。
If we grewour own food, we wouldn't waste a third of it as we do today. If wemade our own tables and chairs, we wouldn't throw them out the momentwe changed the interior decor. If we had to clean our own drinkingwater, we probably wouldn't contaminate it.

So to be the change Iwanted to see in the world, it unfortunately meant I was going to haveto give up cash, which I initially decided to do for a year. I gotmyself a caravan, parked it up on an organic farm where I wasvolunteering and kitted it out to be off-grid. Cooking would now beoutside – rain or shine – on a rocket stove; mobile and laptop would berun off solar; I'd use wood I either coppiced or scavenged to heat myhumble abode, and a compost loo for humanure.
所以为了做到“先修吾身”，我得忍痛放弃金钱，并为此坚持一年时间。我找了辆没有配备电力的拖车做为住所，把它停放在一个有机农场里，我是这个农场的义务劳动者；不管刮风还是下雨，做饭都只用放在外面的火箭炉做；手机和笔记本电脑靠太阳能提供电力；燃烧修剪和拾掇来的木柴为我的陋室取暖，并修一个供人使用的堆肥厕所。
Foodwas the next essential. There are four legs to the food-for-free table:foraging wild food, growing your own, bartering, and using waste grub,of which there is loads. On my first day, I fed 150 people athree-course meal with waste and foraged food. Most of the year,though, I ate my own crops.
接下来的必需品是食物。我可以通过四种途径吃上免费食物：打野味，自己耕种，以物易物，剩饭剩菜（这儿多得是）。在第一天，我拣来的剩饭剩菜就足够喂饱150人。不过这些年里的大部分时间我都是吃自己种的粮食。
To get around, I had a bike andtrailer, and the 34-mile commute to the city doubled up as my gymsubscription. For loo roll I'd relieve the local newsagents of itspapers (I once wiped my arse with a story about myself); it's notdouble-quilted, but I quickly got used to it. For toothpaste I usedwashed-up cuttlefish bone with wild fennel seeds, an oddity for a vegan.
至于出行，我有一辆自行车，还有我的篷车，通往城区的路程有34英里，每天打个来回就是我的健身方式。卫生纸则是当地报纸（我曾用一张写有我自己故事的报纸揩过屁股），这种“卫生纸”并非双层柔适型，但我很快就习惯了它。我使用洗过的墨鱼骨头做牙刷，野生茴香籽做牙膏（素食主义者的古怪用品）。
Whathave I learned? That friendship, not money, is real security. That mostwestern poverty is of the spiritual kind. That independence is reallyinterdependence. And that if you don't own a plasma screen TV, peoplethink you're an extremist.

People often ask me what I miss about my old world of lucre and business. Stress. Traffic jams. Bank statements. Utility bills.

Well, there was the odd pint of organic ale with my mates down the local.
