Members of the public were asked to vote on 10 of the greatest achievements in science, engineering and technology, selected by the museum's curators.

The poll, one of the events marking the museum's centenary year, singled out the X-ray machine as the scientific advance with the greatest impact.

Penicillin came second, followed by the DNA double helix, the Apollo 10 capsule, the V2 rocket engine, Stephenson's Rocket, the Pilot ACE - one of the first computers, the steam engine, the Model T Ford motor car, and the electric telegraph.

The Beatles’ entire back catalogue is still available on BlueBeat for digital download, despite being at the centre of a copyright row with EMI.

American website, BlueBeat, has continued to sell MP3 files of every single Beatles track from 25 cents (15p), all day today, even though The Telegraph has revealed the group’s record label, EMI, has launched an urgent investigation into the unauthorised sale.

An EMI spokesman told The Telegraph today that the company were still looking into the situation and it will take “a little while” before anything changes. It is believed no legal proceedings have been launched yet.

Stuart Dredge, editor of music industry blog, thinks the situation is very strange. “BlueBeat is one the first download stores in the West to sell unlicensed downloads. Usually it’s the pirate sites that behave like this and there have also been some similar issues with Russian and Lithuanian sites.

Mr Dredge first became aware of the illegal sale and free streaming of the Beatles’ tracks last Thursday (October 29). He expects EMI and Apple Corps to sue if BlueBeat continues.
