In the qualification process for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the six FIFA confederations were allocated a share of the 31 remaining spots on the basis of the strength of their teams. The final distribution was as follows:

Europe (UEFA): 13 places
Africa (CAF) : 5 places (South Africa qualified automatically as host nation for a total of 6 places)
South America (CONMEBOL) : 4 or 5 places
Asia(AFC) : 4 or 5 places
North Central American and Caribbean(CONCACAF) : 3 or 4 places
Oceania (OFC) : 0 or 1 place

2010年南非世界杯预选赛将分为六个赛区进行比赛，共决出31个参赛队。根据各个赛区队伍的实力，分配方案如下：

欧洲 13个出线名额

非洲5个名额（南非作为东道主直接进入决赛，因此非洲共6个名额）

南美洲 4.5个出线名额

亚洲4.5个名额

中北美及加勒比地区3.5个名额

大洋洲0.5个名额
