As a boy,he was athletic and tall for his age. One of his happiest memories was when his father gavehim a pony and taught him how to ride it.His father died when he was eleven and he eventually went to live with his older half brother,Lawrence.He didn't have much of a formal educationk, a fact that bothered him most of his life.When he was twenty,he joined the military and worked hard to gain a commission in the British Army.Ironically, he would later become an enemy of the British.
