Specialisation can be seen as aresponse to the problem of an increasing accumulation of scientificknowledge.By splitting up the subject matter into smaller units, one man couldcontinue to handle the information and use it as the basis for furtherresearch.But specialisation was only one of a series of related developments inscience affecting the process of communication.Another was the growingprofessionalisation of scientific activity.
No clear-cut distinction can bedrawn between professionals and amateurs in science: exceptions can be found toany rule.Nevertheless, the word "amateur" does carry aconnotation that the person concerned is not fully integrated into thescientific community and, in particular, may not fully share its values.Thegrowth of specialisation in the nineteenth century, with its consequentrequirement of a longer, more complex training, implied greater problems foramateur participation in science.The trend was naturally most obvious in thoseareas of science based especially on a mathematical or laboratory training, andcan be illustrated in terms of the development of geology in the UnitedKingdom.(此处省略几百字 帖子限制字数)
