a diamond in the rough 深藏不露
When we say this phrase in American English, we usually intend to represent a person, who is kind and good-hearted inside, but might not have appropriate social manners or appear a bit rough on the outside.  We can also apply this phrase when discussing situations or actual things.一些人心地很好，却可能没有得体的利益和华丽的外表。这时，就可以用此个短语来形容那些人。也可以用来形容在看似黯淡的局势下，暗藏着一丝生机。

Examples:
I was surprised to see that prisoner cleaning the streets stop and give the $100 bill he found to his supervisor.  He might just be a diamond in the rough.
我很惊讶地看到那个囚犯在清扫街道的时候把捡到的100美元交给了看管人员。他或许是深藏不露吧。
Perhaps if your company went bankrupt, but through this difficult situation you gain an idea or other opportunity, you could also call the situation a “diamond in the rough.”
如果你的公司要破产了，在如此艰苦的环境下你还得到了一个主意或是一个机会。你就可以把这个情况叫做“diamond in the rough”。
