in a rut 一成不变/墨守成规

When someone stays stuck in a rut, he/she is doing the same thing all the time so that he/she maybe feels bored or stays in a situation where it is impossible to make progress. rut本身指车轮驶过留下的印痕，引申指从过去延续下来的老一套，老规矩。be(stuck) in a rut指处于墨守成规、一成不变并进而不思进取的一种状态。
Examples:
The economy is still stuck in a rut. 经济仍旧停滞不前。
When you feel stuck in a nut, it is time for you to learn something new.
如果你感到自己陷入停滞不前的状态，你该学一些新东西了。
If you are dissatisfied with your old job, you need to get out of the rut.
如果你不满意你的老工作，你就要走出过去乏味的日子（去寻求改变）。
